Anyone can do yoga…

When I tell people I practice yoga and I also teach yoga, these are a few comments I receive:

‘Oh, I should be doing yoga’

‘I’ve always wanted to do yoga’

‘I can’t do yoga, I’m too fat’

‘I’m not flexible enough to do yoga’

‘I’m too old to do yoga’

‘I can’t get down to the floor or get up off the floor’

‘My knees are bad’

Yoga is accessible to every person

who is interested in
‘getting on their mat’ or chair
(though you do not need a mat
or any equipment) to start
practicing yoga.

I began my personal yoga practice~ 20 years ago. In 2013, I became a Certified LV Chair Yoga Teacher through Kripalu and initiated a Chair Yoga Program teaching Deaf and Deaf/Blind residents living in a respite care/rehab/independent living setting. I continued to utilize my skills teaching Chair Yoga to incorporate aspects into my physical therapy treatments with my patients. What I learned was that it allowed me to engage my patients with movement and breath work and have a dialogue with them. They didn’t even realize they were getting in their exercises for the day! I would briefly explain what yoga is but they didn’t really seem to want to know. They just knew that they felt good and had fun when they were doing it. At the end of a session they would ask ‘When can we do this again?’

These residents had so many medical complications, some were in wheelchairs unable to walk, some could not raise their arms over their head, some had difficulty breathing, others were fully able-bodied, and some were bed bound. But ALL OF THEM could participate and DO YOGA. We used blocks, straps, pillows and gave variations to meet people where they were.

I wanted to continue working with private clients in my community in order to offer this same ‘aha’ moment so people will understand that anyone can do yoga. In 2019, I decided I wanted to deepen my yoga knowledge and became a Certified Yoga Teacher and am registered with Yoga Alliance as an RYT-200.

Working in a one-one setting allows for a more in-depth personalized approach to deepening a yoga practice. If a client is intimidated by the idea of walking into a yoga studio, a one-one session is a great entry point to a yoga practice.

Sessions are client-driven and tailored to individual needs and preferences. Some factors that are considered include personal goals, functional abilities, fitness goals.

Whether you want to have one-one sessions or practice with a small group (friends or strangers who are friends), don’t wait any longer to start to get more in-tune with your own
body, mind, and spirit and learn to
